About the Committee
The Roadeo Steering Committee was formed in 1996 and  meets numerous times each year to coordinate the Washington State Public Transportation Roadeo. Committee members share their expertise and roll up their sleeves to make the statewide Roadeo a success.

Committee Goals & Objectives

The Committee is a group of transit agency representatives and community volunteers from throughout the state who help coordinate, plan and execute the annual Washington State Public Transportation Roadeo.

Committee Leadership

The Committee is currently lead by Committee Chair Scott Beasley of King County Metro and Vice Chair Mike Schmieder of Everett Transit. Tom Hanson and Greg Wright of WSDOT will serve as Co-Secretaries.

Committee Events

Each summer the State Public Transportation Roadeo is held in conjunction with the annual state public transportation conference. A public transportation roadeo is a safety and skill competition that encourages excellence and professionalism in bus operators. Bus operators and maintenance teams have separate competitions involving safe driving skills and maintenance disciplines. At the end of the competition, scores are totaled for each bus operator and maintenance team and the highest scores win. The awards are presented at the banquet at the end of the day.

Wondering just what the Roadeo is all about?

It’s a small scale version of what every transit and paratransit operator and mechanic experiences daily. The mechanics in the maintenance shop work hard to keep the buses running efficiently so they can continue to be out on the road daily while the operators strive to give their riders the best experience they can on their trip.

The Roadeo is designed to be a tool for training and safety and the objective is to help improve the safe operation of transit vehicles in a realistic setting, while stressing the need to provide a passenger-friendly, professional service.
How to Get Involved

Please contact Wendi Hill at or Melanie Espinoza at if you would like to be added to the WSTA Roadeo Steering Committee contact list. We also always need volunteers to be judges, scorekeepers, timers, etc. for the Roadeo Competition.
